Open worlds are always a challenge to developers! they require a lot of actors in one world, most engines allow for optimization such as level streaming and easy loading. but for open worlds it requires alot more work to keep the games frame rate at a happy medium.
In unreal engine using static meshes that scale at a distance to 2d helps save frame rate as well as foliage instances that render only when your close enough. it allows the world to be beautiful ad realistic looking.
